A First Timer’s Guide To Laser Hair Removal

A First Timer’s Guide To Laser Hair Removal

So, you’ve been thinking about trying out laser hair removal? We fully approve, but perhaps you’re a little uncertain about what to expect if this is your first time laser hair removal experience. Or, maybe you just have general questions about the procedure. We understand, which is why we’ve created this comprehensive guide to laser hair removal.

Let’s dig in by first addressing what laser removal is and how the procedure works.

How does Laser Hair Removal Work

We probably don’t have to explain too in-depth about what laser hair removal is, but just to make sure we’re all on the same page, laser hair removal is a procedure that is undergone by both men and women -- with the intended goal of eliminating hair growth in treated areas.

At Balsam Spa, we use a laser that operates at a wavelength of 808 nm. This is important, because this particular setting ensures that we damage the hair follicle to prevent hair growth, but we don’t cause any damage to the epidermis (your top, or outermost, layer of skin). The damaged hair follicle is removed naturally by your body, leaving you with smooth, hairless skin.

Of course there’s some more science behind the hair removal process, but the main point that we think clients should understand when they’re experiencing laser hair removal for the first time is this: Repeated procedures with our effective and efficient laser will result in hairless, smooth skin you can feel confident in. Plain and simple.

First Time Laser Hair Removal Experience

We strongly believe that it’s always a good idea to know how a procedure works before undergoing it. However, even more important than understanding the procedure, you should be familiar with the experience.

In other words, when you first experience laser hair removal, what does it feel like and what should you expect?

To put it simply, first time laser hair removal isn’t anything to get worked up about. It’s non-invasive, it causes only mild discomfort and it doesn't require any excessive prepping or cause for concern.

Having said that, we do like to make clients aware that they might experience some mild discomfort and some sensitivity after the procedure. This will vary depending on your typical skin sensitivity, but in general, think of the feeling as similar to a very mild sunburn and you should have a fairly good idea of what to expect after your first time laser hair removal experience.

Also, keep in mind that you will have to undergo the procedure on multiple occasions in order to see results. How many times really just depends on what part of the body you’re targeting and the size of the area. In other words, after your first time laser hair removal experience you shouldn’t expect instant results. Instead, it will be a gradual process of less hair growth over time.

What Benefits To Expect From Laser Hair Removal

Most obviously, you should expect to see less hair growth.

As mentioned, after your first treatment, you’ll probably experience some sensitivity and a small amount of continued hair growth; however, with continued procedures, hair growth in the treated area will be completely eliminated.

Other than hair removal, other benefits of laser hair removal include:

  1. Permanent results
  2. Prevents painful in-grown hairs
  3. Quick, non-invasive, and virtually pain free
  4. No skin damage (precise targeting)
  5. Less skin irritation (your skin might be more sensitive with your first procedure, but over time, skin will grow more tolerant and resilient)
