How To Get The Best IPL Results: Pre and Post-Care

Do you long for smoother and clearer skin? So many of us invest in expensive anti-aging creams and cleansers to rejuvenate our skin. However, we are often left feeling unsatisfied with the minor results these bring us.

If you want a more effective solution to achieve a smoother skin tone, then IPL (intense pulsed light) is the treatment for you. This light-based technology treats facial problems caused by aging or overexposure to the sun — such as hyperpigmentation, broken capillaries, wrinkles and more.

IPL has been proven to help tighten skin, reduce the appearance of blemishes and encourage collagen production that improves the elasticity of your skin. If you have unwanted acne scars, freckles or skin redness, this advanced treatment can completely remove any signs of these.

What is IPL?

As it is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure, IPL is safe and non-invasive. It works by using a special device that shines wavelengths of light over the targeted skin areas.

This light penetrates the second layer of your skin and produces heat. The heat then targets pigmentation and breaks down these cells deep below the skin’s surface.

What Happens During an IPL Procedure?

During an IPL session, you will wear sunglasses and your skin specialist will apply a cool cream to necessary areas of your skin before starting. Depending on the sensitivity of your skin, you may feel a slight stinging sensation during the treatment — however, this is completely normal. Each session varies in length, depending on the size and severity of the area being treated.

A complete list of what IPL can help reduce the appearance of includes:

  • Hyperpigmentation

  • Broken capillaries

  • Wrinkles and fine lines

  • Acne, blemishes and pores

  • Redness of skin

Pre-Treatment: What To Do Before Receiving IPL

To achieve the best results, you will need to put in a little self-care before receiving IPL. Depending on your treatment, you should follow these guidelines for two-four weeks prior to your session:

  • Don’t use tanning beds

  • Wear factor 30+ SPF when outside and avoid direct sunlight

  • Don’t use aspirin or ibuprofen — ingestion of these before treatment can increase redness and risk the treatment failing

  • Avoid creams containing retinol or vitamin A

  • Don’t undergo any other types of skin treatments (eg. chemical peels or hair removal, such as waxing)

Tell your IPL skin practitioner about any skin issues, like eczema or acne, that could interfere with the procedure, and let them know if you have any doubts or queries. They will be able to inform you on how to best protect your skin before treatment.

Post-Care: How To Ensure You Get The Best Results

To guarantee good results, you should follow these rules (as well as any other guidance that your skin practitioner gives you):

  • Avoid direct sunlight for up to a month

  • Wear a high factor SPF every day

  • Keep your skin cool, avoid very hot showers or exercise as sweat production can irritate the skin

  • Clean your skin gently each day with cool water, and pat it dry. Use sensitive cleansers and moisturizers

  • Don’t pick at any scabs that form over treated areas (these will fall off naturally)

  • Avoid any skincare products that include retinol and vitamin A, as these will aggravate your skin and potentially interrupt the effects of the treatment
